Solar Gin: the craft of sun-distilled gin.

A handcrafted gin without the use of fossil fuels, you say? Yes, you heard well! In this article, our inventor Kevin van de Merlen explains how he tricked the sun into distilling the Solar Gin for him.

Solar Gin is artisanal and produced only using sustainable solar energy. This new technology is developped by the master distiller and we use a Solar destilling system to produce our delicous gin using a traditional copper pot still.

Traditional Gin is a distillation product of alcohol and an original combination of selected botanicals. The aroma of the gin depends on the type and quality of grain (the key element for producing the alcohol), the selection of botanicals, the distilling process and the pot still. In this article we will talk about the production process of the alcohol and the gin making itself. We will also reveal in which ways Solar Gin uses the Solar energy, which enables the production of Solar Gin.

Gin is a product of distillation, just like whisky. The production is explained in 3 major phases. 1) alcoholic fermentation, 2) distilling the grain alcohol 3) selecting the botanicals and redistilling the gin

Phase 1: the alcoholic fermentation.

This phase is driven by millions of micro-brewers who are working for us: the yeast. To produce Solar Gin we start from grain, which is malted to set sugar components free into the liquid we call the mash. The yeast will be left alone at a comfortable temperature to slowly convert the sugar into alcohol. This gradual process enables us to obtain a pure and delicate alcohol.

phase 2: distilling the mash.

HThe mash which contains water an ethanol (after removal of the yeast) is distilled in this phase. The distilling is a separation process due to the difference in boiling point, using heat to drive this process. In this way, the ethanol will be removed from the mash before the water and condensates to obtain a pure ethanol. Solar Gin uses the heat of the sun to drive the distilling process and reuses the water which is necessary for condensation, obtaining a very sustainable process to create a pure ethanol for further use.

Phase 3: the finishing touch

To produce the actual Solar Gin the pure alcohol from the first steps is combined with handpicked and thoroughly selected botanicals. The alcohol will extract the flavour compounds from the juniper amongst the other botanic elements during a slumber period lasting a number of days. To create the final distillation product, the Solar pot still is fired up one last time. The mixture of botanicals, water and alcohol is distilled a final time selecting the right cuts to create this premium gin. This selection process is the art of the master distiller to obtain a pure gin, rich in flavour.

The total production process takes up to one month. The Solar Gin is produced at ease to obtain its rich and solar flavours. Would you like to try the result of our craftsmanship? Follow us here.
